There are plenty of different family hair care tips that you can use in your home that will allow you to avoid all of the different chemicals that manufacturers put into their beauty products. One thing that has been used successfully for a long time is replacing your family’s shampoos and conditioners with a baking soda and vinegar combo treatment. In this article, we will explain why you should consider weaning your family off of shampoo and conditioners and replacing them with these ingredients that you probably already have sitting in your cupboard right now.
Is this a Real Alternative?
This is something that many will write off immediately. Some people just can’t imagine doing this as they are so use to using shampoos and other beauty products throughout their lives. We are here to tell you it is not as crazy as it sounds. We are the only species on the planet that uses shampoo and we have not been using it for very long. The main reason for this is that we simply don’t need it.
Of course, if you are like everyone else and wash your hair every day, you will notice the difference in your hair after a few days of not washing it. If you stop washing your hair altogether, you will find that it is completely unnecessary once your body acclimates to it. After enough time of not washing your hair, your body will re-regulate the oils that is creates on the scalp that protects the hair follicles.
Why do we want to Stop using Shampoo as a Family Hair Care Solution?
Shampoo will eventually cause damage to your hair. It contains chemicals that remove many of the oils that your hair needs and is not a good long term family hair care option even though it is used by so many families. When you stop washing your hair with all of the chemicals that are contained in most family hair care beauty products, you will stop doing damage to it. The long-term effects of not washing your hair will result in thicker, fuller and healthier hair. You will notice that you have fewer split ends and less of it will fall out when you brush your hair because of the added strength it gains.
It is great to use for adults and children alike and is perfect top use as a family hair care alternative. It doesn’t matter what type of hair you have, this treatment will work for everyone. In fact, allowing children to become accustomed to not washing their hair at an early age will set them up to enjoy their perfectly healthy hair for a long time to come.
Replacing Shampoo with Baking Soda
Although it is fairly easy to simply stop shampooing your hair, there are some things that you may want to do to make sure that your hair looks good. One of those things is rinsing it with baking soda. Baking soda provides many of the benefits to your hair that shampooing and conditioning does. Baking soda is able to clean hair the same way that shampoo does.It can also soften hair just like conditioner does.
The reason is able to do this is because of the pH levels within the baking soda. Our hair has a slightly acidic pH level when it is wet. When you apply baking soda to it, it reduces some of the pH levels and provides balance to it. This is one of the main advantages that baking soda has over shampoo or conditioner.
What does Baking Soda really do to your Hair?
The natural consistency of baking soda is very abrasive on a micro level. It also has highly absorbent properties. The properties of these two ingredients allow baking soda to scrub and absorb all of the dirt and grime that will stick your hair in between washes. The absorption qualities that baking soda has is something that shampoo and conditioner cannot match. Shampoos and conditioners aim to clean the hair of oil and grime but they do not have any ingredients that can actually absorb it from the hair follicles.
Baking soda is one of the best ways to give your hair a deep cleanse which makes it a perfect family hair care option. It is so effective that it only has to be done once every 1 to 2 weeks. This will make things a lot easier on your hair then shampooing it once or twice a day. As a bonus, it will save you a lot of time when you’re getting ready for your day or getting your kids ready for school.
There are a few mixtures that you can create which will provide your hair with the shampoo and conditioning affects that you can use a family hair care substitute.
Baking Soda Shampoo
In order to make a baking soda rinse which will clean your hair just as a shampoo would, combine one part baking soda with two parts warm water. Generally 1 1/2 cups of this mixture should be enough. The warm water will allow the baking soda to dissolve more easily. Stir the mixture until the baking soda has completely dissolved in the water.
The texture of the mixture should be thick and pasty. It should be thin enough that you can easily spread it throughout your hair but thick enough that it will not drain off immediately. It is okay if you do not get the proportions exact. The main idea is to ensure that you are able to massage the baking soda into your hair and have it stay in place.
Massage it into your scalp and down through the ends of your hair. Scrub it in your hair vigorously for a few minutes so that the baking soda can remove all of the dirt and grime from your hair. Once you’re done, you can rinse it off in the shower.Next, there are two ways to make a family hair care conditioner using either baking soda or vinegar which we will discuss below.
Baking Soda Conditioner
Baking soda conditioner is made with one part baking soda and two parts conditioner. This will have similar effects as the baking soda shampoo with the added benefits of your favorite conditioner. It is recommended that you use this after you treat your hair with the baking soda shampoo to see the best results. Leave the baking soda conditioner in a shower cap for 20 minutes before you rinse it out.
Instead of the baking soda conditioner, you may also use a vinegar mixture as a conditioner substitute. To make a vinegar conditioner, add 2 tablespoons of vinegar to 1 cup of water.
Note: you should use apple cider vinegar for this. You should not use white vinegar.
After you apply the baking soda shampoo and have rinsed it out, massage the vinegar mixture into your hair. Allow it to set in your hair for 1 to 2 minutes and rinse it out completely.
After the baking soda and vinegar treatment is finished, you should have a clean, oil free and soft head of hair. This treatment will typically leave you with a clean head of hair for a longer amount of time than a normal shampoo and conditioner wash will. You can go for up to two weeks without treating your hair depending on the type of hair you have and how active you are (if you are in situations where you will break a sweat or not). If you are a very active person, you may want to increase the amount of times that you treat your hair to once or twice per week. The same applies for the family hair care of your children. If they are outside running around a lot, you should increase the amount of times they wash their hair as much as 1-2 times per week.
Aside from the baking soda treatment, you only have to rinse your hair with water out as you wash your body regularly. The baking soda is enough to keep your hair clean with minimal effort. With long-term use of this method, the oil that your scalp produces will start to decrease. This is because your body will realize that it no longer has to replace the oils that shampoo takes out as often as it did when you washed it on a daily basis. This is why people that do not shampoo regularly do not necessarily have oily or greasy hair.
If you are a parent, you know how difficult it is to wash your child’s hair. You have to deal with the shampoo getting their eyes and them fighting against it every time you have to wash it. By using the baking soda method, you can cut down on this significantly. This will save you a lot of time and keep your kids much happier when it is time to wash up.
The baking soda method is more than enough to clean your hair if used consistently. The only thing that is missing from is the scents that shampoos and conditioners will leave in your hair. There are a few ways to add scents to your hair. You can add a spray or two of perfume or body spray to your hair or you can use the hair products that you would normally use.
If you do use hair products, remember that your hair will be a different consistency than what you are used to with the new treatment that you are using. Take this into account as you apply any product to it.
Going All Natural
Some people will take this family hair care treatment even farther and completely take themselves and their family off of the baking soda and vinegar treatment as well. As you transition into the baking soda and vinegar treatments, take note how your hair gradually becomes less greasy a few days after each successive watch. After a while, you can start to lessen the amount of baking soda treatments that you use.
If you do this too quickly, your hair will eventually start to smell and will look and feel greasy. If you ease into this slowly enough, you will eventually be able to stop washing your hair altogether without it appearing greasy or oily. The idea is that you will be slowly allowing your body to become accustomed to it by balancing the right amount of oil production that your scalp and hair needs. As you do this, you should also refrain from using any type of gels or losing your hair. Using these styling products may impede your body’s ability to reach that balance naturally. Once you have made the full transition through this family hair care treatment, it will be safe to use hair products or baking soda rinses occasionally.
